Background
The District Council of Loxton Waikerie invites members of the community to provide feedback on its future composition and structure, required as part of the Representation Review currently being undertaken.
About Representation Reviews
Conducting a representation review is a statutory responsibility of councils under section 12 of the Local Government Act 1999, generally undertaken every eight (8) years. This process requires council to consider if the community would benefit from altering the composition or ward structure of the council.
A review can result in several changes, including:
- the number of elected members,
- the type of principal member,
- introduction, abolishment or amendment of ward boundaries,
- the names of wards, and
- the name of the council.
DCLW's Representation Review
In January 2025, Council engaged CL Rowe and Associates (the consultant) to facilitate the representation review process. The consultant worked with elected members to discuss the range of options available as part of the review (detailed above), which assisted Council in proposing a future structure that does not operate within wards, and to retain the same number of elected members as is currently in place (10). The proposal also recommends the principal member (mayor) be elected by the residents of the Council, rather than elected internally by other councillors.
Public consultation is now open on proposal, which will occur from Wednesday 25 June until 5pm Wednesday 16 July 2025.
