Background

Council is pleased to announce that repair works on the William Street Staircase will soon commence, bringing much-needed access back to the riverfront for the community.

The staircase, which sustained significant structural damage during the 2022/2023 Murray River floods, has remained closed to the public for safety reasons. This has left an important river access point unavailable for local residents and visitors.

Following the flooding, Council initiated an assessment and investigation into the damage, seeking quotes for remediation. The repair process experienced significant delays due to the complexities involved in the claiming the work through insurance.

Council previously expressed its frustration with these extended timelines, and also acknowledged that various factors, such as the nature of the repair work and contractor availability, were beyond its immediate control.

Council has engaged Seacon Australia, a maritime construction company, to undertake the required repairs, including the installation of screw piles to landing supports, replacement of missing handrails, and reinstatement of the retaining wall. While works were initially scheduled to begin in June 2025 with a planned reopening in October 2025, Seacon Australia has recently attended the site to finalise preparations and scheduling. Due to contractor availability, earlier scheduling conflicts, and unavoidable delays works are now programmed to commence in early 2026.
